Hacker shows how Apple restricts iPhone chargers

Most cell phone manufacturers have charging standards these days, even if they can’t always agree on which version of USB to use, but as the hair-tearing message above shows, third-party renditions of Apple’s proprietary dock connector haven’t always been universal solutions for iPods and iPhones. Now we know another important reason why — secret resistors placed on the data lines in connectors for each iDevice. Minty Boost creator ladyada recently reverse-engineered the chargers Read the full story

iPhone 4 Catches Fire, Burns Owner’s Hand

Joining a long and storied lineage of combustible Apple products, an iPhone 4 recently caught on fire when being hooked up to a computer via its Apple-provided USB cord. The phone was fried and its owner’s hand singed, reports BGR.

According to a source inside AT&T, the charring resulted from a faulty USB port and not human error:

Apple did confirm to our AT&T connection that this did appear to be a defective USB port and not some sort of user error. Our source went onto say that the phone bezel was extremely hot (obviously), and it slightly burned the customers hand. The USB port in the phone was slightly melted and the cord was badly melted (as is apparent in the pictures).

iPhone 4 Charge Times: USB vs. Outlet

Take a look at this chart from When Will Apple comparing the amount of time it takes to charge an iPhone 4 by USB versus wall outlet.

Stating the obvious, the iPhone 4 takes longer to get a full charge on USB than an outlet. What you may not have realized is how big the difference was, an extra 30 minutes! That’s 23% longer to get a full charge on the USB. If you’ve ever had a completely drained iPhone, you know it takes a bit of time before it turns back on. Plugged into an outlet, it took 3 minutes 11 seconds to come back to life. On USB it took almost 2 minutes longer, taking 4 minutes 49 seconds.

Apple iPad charging problems:

USB hubs, non-Macs and weak ports not rejuvenating

Heads-up, iPad owners (or to-be owners, as it were) — the same devices you currently use to juice up your iPod touch or iPhone may not work on your fancy new tablet. Consumer Reports, TUAW and our own Chris Ziegler have confirmed that their powered USB hubs wouldn’t charge the iPad, and we’re even seeing reports that some Wintel rigs won’t either. The only sure bets right now are Apple computers and your nearby AC outlet, leaving iPad owners with fewer options when it comes to topping off that battery when away from your abode. We’re pretty certain this all boils down to the iPad requiring more power than most powered USB ports are designed to give, but it’s still something to keep in mind. So, any of you Read the full story
