Apple has added a new layer of security to the iPhone 3GS. I mentioned it several posts earlier; it’s the ECID field. When iTunes starts the restore process, they contact Apple servers to generate signatures just for your device. It’s important you get these signatures for your phone before a new version of the software comes out. I had previously suggested doing this by dumping usb while the iPhone restores. But this is complicated.

Here’s what worked.
Make sure you have a version of iTunes other than 8.2 (you can download 8.0.2 here).
1. If you are using iTunes 8.2 you will need to downgrade to 8.0.2. This can be done by deleting the iTunes app.
2. You then need to open Activity Monitor (in the utilities folder) and quit iTunes Helper.
3. Go to System Prefrences>Accounts>Login Items and disable iTunes helper.

If you have already ended up upgrading your iPhone 3G firmware 3.0 and feeling to downgrade back to Firmware 2.2.1 then follow below guide, however you must know you can only downgrade your iPhone Firmware 3.0 but not baseband 04.20.01.
How to Downgrade iPhone Firmware 3.0 to 2.2.1
1. Connect your iPhone to your Mac or PC and select your iPhone from the list of devices in iTunes
2. If iTunes does not detect your iPhone then you will need to put it in DFU (Device Firmware Upgrade) mode.
