New iPod touch: Retina display, FaceTime, HD video recording

Current iPod touch wasn’t thin enough for you? Look no further than… well, the new iPod touch just announced today. Naturally, Apple has re-upped its “iPhone without the phone” to include the Retina Display from the iPhone 4, an Apple A4 core, 3-axis gyroscope, Game Center, and FaceTime support thanks to the addition of a front cam. Oh, and speaking of cams, it’s also got a rear cam capable of HD video — but you’ll be paying a bit more than you will for that cute little nano: $229 for 8GB, $299 for 32GB, and $399 for 64GB (yep, 16GB and 128GB are both no-shows). Ships next week, pre-orders start today; follow the break for the full press release.

Apple iPad with iOS 4.2, features AirPlay media streaming

Apple is also talking up iOS 4.2 today, which will be everything iOS 4.1 is bringing, plus some extra goodies, and will finally bring iOS 4 (hello multitasking!) to the iPad. The most exciting of the new features is AirPlay, which is Apple’s redub for AirTunes, with the important addition of being able to stream music and video to your i-device over WiFi (with an iPad even acting as host for the new Apple TV). Also over WiFi is a new wireless printing feature, complete with a little Print Center Read the full story

iPod touch FaceTime calling to be based on email addresses?

We’ve been assuming that the next iPod touch will get in on Apple’s FaceTime video-calling action, but the open question has been how calls will actually be initiated without phone numbers, and BGR’s saying it has the scoop: it’s going to be based on email addresses. Registering an email address with the touch and FaceTime will let people videocall you using that address, but apparently calling an iPhone user will still involve knowing their phone number, which is a little odd — but Read the full story

Facebook for iPhone / iPod touch now iOS 4 compatible

We’ll get right to the point: the Facebook app for your iPhone / iPod touch is now drinking the iOS 4 Kool-Aid. Fast app switching, high resolution icons (better than the one seen above, since that’s pre-update), Korean / Russian localizations, and… that’s about it for now. Maybe background image / video uploading is on the list of to-do’s, but at least it won’t look quite as pixel-deficient on the home screen next to Twitter.

Pages for iPhone gets a full walkthrough

We’ve been seeing hints here and there that the iPad versions of Apple’s iWork apps will eventually trickle down to the iPhone and iPod touch, and now it looks like we’ve got some definitive proof: 9to5 Mac has published a thorough screenshot walkthrough of Pages. As you’d expect, it looks a lot like a smaller version of Pages for the iPad, but there are some interesting tidbits here and there: all documents sync over the air with all your iOS devices, there’s integration with the oft-forgotten iWork.com, and you can export in .doc and PDF in addition to Pages format. Interesting stuff, to say the least — hit the read link for the complete set of shots.

iPhone OS 4 renamed iOS 4, launching June 21 with 1500 new features

We knew it had to happen eventually — iPhone OS has been renamed to iOS with the bump to version 4. Some 1500 new features are coming along with the name change, including biggies like multitasking, a unified inbox, app folders, and data detectors. Although Apple is encouraging devs to tweak their apps for the iPhone 4’s new Retina Display, iOS4 will also automatically redraw text and controls for existing apps to make them play nice with the new higher pixel density. Bing search integration has also been added to iOS 4 in addition to Google and Yahoo — Google is still the default, though. The golden master is available to devs today, and Steve says the 100 millionth iOS device — that’s iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad — will Read the full story
