Apple patent: games need buttons

It’s pretty rare that Apple patent applications reveal much more than vague plans and ideas about future devices, but a newly-public filing out of Cupertino just comes right out and states the truth about gaming on touchscreen devices like the iPhone: it can be “somewhat awkward, particularly on a portable electronic device having a touchscreen” because the “user’s fingers block the action.” So what’s the solution? GameBone Accessory Will Turn iPhones Into PSP

When we last saw renders of the GameBone iPhone gaming accessory it looked ridiculous. But the latest design actually looks like something we might slip our iPhones into to give them four buttons and a d-pad.

The accessory features “a 2000mAh battery for additional power, an LED to show charging state and capcity, start/select buttons, built-in stereo speakers, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and an omni-directional microphone.” There’s no exact release Read the full story

Apple locks down iPhone trademark

Patently Apple has sniffed out the latest, and most comprehensive, trademark registration acquired by Apple on the subject of the iPhone and we thought we’d have a peek. Already entitled to use the brand name under international categories 9 (mobile phone and digital audio player) and 38 (electronic data-transmitting device), Apple has now added category 28, which reads shortly and sweetly as a ‘handheld unit for playing electronic games.’ Before you freak out and start fusing this Read the full story

iHandstick snap-on dresses your iPhone / iPod Touch up as a Playstation controller

The iPod touch (and technically the iPhone as well) may well be “the funnest iPod ever,” but it can also be the most awkward device to hold for prolonged gaming sessions, nor have previous attempts made things any better. The iHandstick might just do the job — while we can’t credit them for originality, this hollow cousin of the Playstation controller may satisfy owners of iPod touch 2G / 3G and iPhone 3G / 3GS. Remember, it should give a similar grip enjoyed by millions of Playstation Read the full story
