London school children to get free loaner iPhones in experimental, educational trial

It’s not the first time we’ve seen the iPhone used as an experimental means of education, but a London school’s recent announcement of its plans has caught our attention. The Gumley House Convent School — a small, Christian School for girls ages 11 to 18 — in London has laid out its plan to use give Apple’s smartphone to a select group of 30 students as a test educational measure. Previous efforts we’ve seen to rope the iPhone into modern education have been mostly at the collegiate level, but Gumley’s plan is still a bit vague. The girls will have free access to all of the phone’s features with the exception of actual calls, and the trial will last until the end of the school year. Like we said — the school’s not given out details as to Read the full story

AT&T Comes in Last in Consumer Reports Study That Surprises No One

Here’s some news anyone with an iPhone could have told you: AT&T delivers crappy service that its customers hate. But this news comes from a reputable source, Consumer Reports, instead of the usual whiny friends.

Yes, in 19 of the 26 cities surveyed, AT&T was ranked dead last in every category. Verizon was ranked the best, followed by T-Mobile, then Sprint and then, of course, bringing up the rear is our friend AT&T.

You’ve got to wonder if Apple can afford to stick this exclusivity contract out another year, what with decent competitors such as the Droid and the Pre now available. AT&T is as big a black mark on Apple’s customer service reputation as they’ve ever had. And hell, for AT&T’s sake it’d be nice to see some other carriers share the burden of iPhone data hogs.

iPhone camera mod for magnification: because you can

iPhone camera mod for magnification: because you can

We’ve thought before how nice it might be to have some powers of magnification on the iPhone’s cam… but are we going to go out and mod our unit? Probably not, but that doesn’t mean we can’t admire someone else’s work. Taking various lenses and attaching them to the lid of a jar, the modder quite carefully built a contraption that looks a little “hobo Steampunk” to us, but we’re still fairly impressed with this little gadget. Hit the read link for full, detailed instructions and more photos if Read the full story

iPhone app debuts for plastic surgery enthusiasts

Dear reader, we think you’re beautiful. We really do. But we hear you’ve got a “friend” who’s been considering some nip / tuck action. Luckily there is now an iPhone app that will let him or her not only peruse the handiwork of a certain Steven M. Denenberg, M.D., of Omaha Nebraska, but it will put your friend in touch with him for a consult, if desired. Providing an important service? That’s debatable. Worth the 99 cent price of admission? Probably not. PR after the break.

iPhone Ebooks: The New Fart Apps

iPhone Ebooks: The New Fart Apps

buzzy new report says that iPhone ebook apps are on the rise, and accounted for more new apps in October—nearly a fifth—than even games. It’s unexpected and exciting, but what does it mean? Spam, is what.

The data shows a clear rise in ebook apps over the last few months, such that they account for a staggering number of the new apps showing up in the store. It’s true! Look at the chart! But here’s the thing: this is purely a measure of how many new apps there are, not how well they’re doing. But still, why such a huge uptick? Let’s do a little experiment.

iphone_ebooks_apps

Pick your favorite public domain book. No, scratch that, pick your least favorite public domain book—something you had to read back in freshman year of college, and that you immediately and angrily sold back to the campus bookstore. Now, search for it in the App Store. Here’s our answer:

iphone_ebooks_app_1

Treasure Island, a free, public domain book, is available for purchase as a standalone app from over a dozen different developers, in all kinds of containers, at all kinds of prices. And why not! the content is free, so once developer has designed an ebook app container, he can just paste any public domain etext in there and throw it into the App Store. I have no idea if these things sell, but to be honest, they wouldn’t have to do very well to make money for their developers—the investment is minimal.

Even more to the point, if the iPhone really starts to pose a threat to tradition ereaders, it won’t be evident in stats like this—it’ll be through increased book downloads in all-in-one ereader apps, like Amazon’s Kindle, B&N’s Reader and unaffiliated apps like eReader and Stanza. That’s a real possibility, but for now, we should call this rapid explosion of redundant, overpriced, exploitative apps like we see it. [GigaOm]

The Cheapest Way To Smash An iPhone For Fun

The Cheapest Way To Smash An iPhone For Fun

Oddly enough, a website called iPhonedummy.net is selling realistic looking but completely non-functional iPhone dummies for $20 apiece. As stupid as that sounds, there are a million and one uses for this thing.

The most obvious use would be as a cheap, smashable/stompable/blendable/microwaveable prop for film of home videos. I would imagine that practical jokers and modders might also find reasons to spend $20 on a dummy instead of blowing Read the full story
