GV Mobile 2.0 first look

It’s pretty simple: Apple’s iPhone OS is basically the only major smartphone operating system without an official or unofficial Google Voice client. We used to have GV Mobile and VoiceCentral, but as we all know, those were abruptly removed from the App Store and even Google’s official client was turned away. Well, at least Apple didn’t Amazon your iPhone and take away the Google Voice applications you already bought/downloaded, right? They might as well have as GV Mobile was rendered useless after a Google Voice-side update, and with no way of updating existing user’s applications, anyone who had been a GV Mobile user up until that point in time was out of luck.

Kindle App for iPhone goes international, starts to get a little annoying at parties

We get it, Amazon Kindle App: you’ve just become available in over 60 countries, you’re something of a jet setter now. But you don’t have to go around and rub it in our faces. So what if we’ve only been to Mexico that one time by accident and can’t sync books and page placement via Amazon’s Whispersync technology… that doesn’t make us any less valuable as a person. Oh, and you’re coming to the Mac and

Magellan’s GPS Car Kit for iPhone and iPod Touch: $130, coming next month

We heard earlier this month that Magellan was looking to one-up TomTom by outing an iPod touch / iPhone GPS car kit of its very own, but a few critical details were missing: namely, a price and a release date. Thanks to a new product listing on Amazon (capped after the break), we at least have a clue as to when this thing will be shipping stateside and for how much. If you’ll recall, this one’s compatible with the 2nd and 3rd generation iPod touch as well as the iPhone 3G and 3GS, and aside from providing a built-in speaker, charging capabilities and a noise-canceling handsfree speakerphone, it’ll also work with any navigation or location-based app — not just Magellan’s own $79.99 RoadMate program. The unfortunate part Read the full story

DoubleTwist’s Amazon MP3 Store: One Less Reason to Bother With iTunes

DoubleTwist’s Amazon MP3 Store: One Less Reason to Bother With iTunes

It’s impossible not to love the concept of doubleTwist, the all-devices-welcome quasi-iTunes music manager, but up to this point the software has been pretty barebones. Now, things are gettin’ ser-i-ous: doubleTwist has a built-in music store, courtesy of Amazon.

To put this into context, doubleTwist debuted not just as an alternative music manager for people with or without Apple players, but as a giant, coded jab at iTunes, Apple, and the way they do business. After launch, DVD Jon, who created doubleTwist, spent a few months waging a small-scale PR war, hanging Apple-baiting banners in San Francisco and parodying their famous “1984″ ad. WithAmazon MP3 store integration, that ad’s promise—to “bring you choice”—has come true, and it’s worth a thousand PR stunts

CourseSmart Dumps 7,000+ Textbooks Into the iPhone App Store

courseapps

They’re hugely different devices, sure, but could the iPhone be stepping on the Kindle’s toes again? CourseSmart, which offers subsciption-based, notes-capable eBooks online, has released a full-featured iPhone app for their subscribers. In other words, yes.

The app is free, but you’ll need preexisting subscriptions to textbooks in order to access any. It’s actually a shrewd, if somewhat obvious move for CourseSmart: lots of college kids have iPhones and iPod Touches, and while taking notes and reading long passages might be a little cumbersome on such a tiny screen, the ability to carry all your books in-pocket, complete with search and bookmarking capabilities, is a pretty big value-add.
